THE PITFALLS BEHIND CONSUMER-GRADE DEVICES

If you read the title of this particular blog entry, then you’ve probably already guessed that we plan on making the argument for ruggedized enterprise-grade mobile devices in the workplace. However, in an attempt to offer a truly transparent argument, we will first spell out the attraction of considering consumer-grade devices.

Consumer-grade devices are just what they sound like. These are smartphones, tablets, etc. that are designed for personal use. They typically require add-on peripherals to be used in the workplace. And while companies are increasingly turning to mobile technology to help drive the next level of productivity, efficiency, and service in their organizations, some are drawn to enlist consumer-grade devices for a number of reasons.

Many consumer-grade devices are obsolete within 18 months, What if a device breaks beyond repair and the latest version has different dimensions or connectors making the accessories, cases, pouches, sleds, scanners, and chargers obsolete?

COSTLY DOWNTIME

Many mobile technology providers make repair a complicated, lengthy process or may not provide a comprehensive coverage option at all. A device taken out of rotation sends ripples of downtime throughout the enterprise.


THE HIGH PRICE PAID

As inexpensive as they may look at first, consumer-grade mobility can actually extract a high price in additional accessories and peripherals, rapid obsolescence, and potential downtime. Plus, consumer-grade devices are not inherently designed to accept add-ons or upgrades as the technology evolves.
